Currently, in Gia Lai province, the proportion of people with Rh- very rare antigen (called rare Rh- blood type) increases. Therefore, the lives of people with this blood group are easily in danger if the disease has no blood in the same group for transfusion.

Mr. Le Anh Hieu, born in 1987 (address 72 Ton That Tung, Pleiku city, Gia Lai) – member of Gia Lai rare blood club shared: In early 2017, his sisters name was Le Thi Trang was hospitalized for emergency blood transfusions due to difficult birth, doctors called all family members, brothers and sisters to donate blood and test to see if there were rare blood types. “At that time, I knew I have a blood type (B) Rh-. Thanks to the same rare blood group, I saved sisters life and her baby” added Le Anh Hieu.

Discovered herself belong to the blood group (O) Rh- when pregnant with her first son, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Tra (born in 1985), Gia Lai Power Company employee was very worried, but when she studied, she actively participated in donating her rare blood to save people, she said: “I myself know that people from rare blood groups will face more difficulties than those with normal blood type. Therefore, every time I helped, seeing the life revived after the blood transfusion, I was happy for them and also happy for myself because I would need the help of the people later who have this rare blood group”.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Lap – a member of the rare blood club, during a blood donation to save people at Gia Lai General Hospital

As one of the active members of the club, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Lap – currently a teacher at Kim Dong Primary & Secondary School, Dak Po district happily said: To date, he has donated and saved many people. Each time he receives a phone call for emergency blood donation from the hospital, or the patients family member, he is willing to “go on his mission”. Recently, thanks to his rare blood group (B) Rh-, an accident patient in Duc Co district escaped from death. For Mr. Lap, rare blood types owner like him “are unlucky” because they can give anyone but only receive their own blood type (Rh-). Therefore, it is difficult to find a source of blood for himself. When I participated in rare blood group activities, seeing many people standing on the edge of life, I felt that my work was more necessary and meaningful than ever.

Mr. Bui Tri Hai, expert of Dak Do districts Economic and Infrastructure Department cheerfully said: “When I think of my rare blood drops, I can help someone and I feel very happy. I will continue to be volunteer for blood donation whenever I can and I think this is a beautiful gesture that everyone needs to work together to save lives that need help. ”

Launching the rare blood group club in Gia Lai

Doctor Ho Thanh Liem – Head of Hematology – Blood Transfusion Department, Gia Lai General Hospital said: Many rare blood group patients regain their life thanks to the enthusiastic help of  rare blood group members in Gia Lai. Currently in the province, the blood group with Rh-antigen is very rare, accounting for 0.05% to 0.07% of the population. Characteristics of the Rh-blood group are possible for blood transfusions for people with normal blood or Rh-, but only receive from people with Rh- blood type. If a person with a Rh blood group – not given the right blood type – can lead to dangerous complications. Therefore, the establishment and operation of Gia Lai Rare Blood Club in operation is extremely important, thereby helping the hospital quickly resolve the “rare” blood source when patients need emergency blood transfusion.

Talking to us, Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc, in charge of blood donation – Gia Lai Voluntary Blood Donation Steering Committee said: “Because of the dangerous level of Rh- blood group, The provincial steering committee for voluntary blood donation campaign has established and launched the Gia Lai rare blood group with over 20 members and volunteers. On the one hand, helping the members of the club understand their blood type, on the other hand, it is possible to mobilize a rare source of blood when the patient has an incident. We want people with Rh-blood groups to join the rare blood group to help other members, which is also a way to help themselves. The expansion of the club is essential, we are currently reviewing, calling and gathering more rare blood type people, and inviting them to join this meaningful club ”.
